GQ Exclusive: D’Angelo Plugs In
From GQ correspondent Amy Wallace’s June 2012 profile:
D’Angelo’s newfound discipline is evident in the way he has thrown himself into studying a new instrument, practicing for five and six hours a day. “The one benefit of this eleven-year sabbatical was he used 10,000 Gladwellian hours to master the guitar,” says Questlove, who compares D to Frank Zappa. “He can play the shit out of it, and I don’t mean no Lil Wayne shit.
“This is a very powerful medium that we are involved in,” he says gravely. “I learned at an early age that what we were doing in the choir was just as important as the preacher. It was a ministry in itself. We could stir the pot, you know? The stage is our pulpit, and you can use all of that energy and that music and the lights and the colors and the sound. But you know, you’ve got to be careful.”

NEW CHICAGO RECORD LABEL CHERRIES RECORDS LAUNCHES FIRST LIMITED EDITION 7” RELEASE
Chicago, IL— On Tuesday, May 7, 2012, Cherries Records proudly presents Feels So Right b/w Love’s Gone Wrong, the new 7” limited edition release by Chicago producer and artist Cermakk & Doug Shorts. This is Cherries Records’ first release and official launch of the Chicago based label.
After a chance visit to a record store where Cermakk randomly found and purchased a Doug Shorts 45 on vinyl, the two eventually forged a musical friendship beginning in Doug’s basement a.k.a. “Funkland”. It was in Funkland where the future sound of Cherries Records was created, the sound of the intertwining of modern r&b/funk beats with the romanticism of classic lyrics and smooth, soulful vocals.
Feels So Right b/w Love’s Gone Wrong drops May 15, 2012. Available for purchase on 7” vinyl on http://www.cherriesrecords.com
About Cermakk
Chicago’s own up and coming producer/songwriter Cermakk has been creating original songs and beats since the 90s. His new sound digs into a modern R&B sound with a late 80s/early 90s vibe, which caught the ears of executives at Cherries Records, and created his first official production appearance on vinyl.
About Doug Shorts
Singer and songwriter Doug Shorts has been singing since the late 60s, and withholds a bounty of amazing material that he’s written over the past 40 years. He began singing in his early teens with harmony groups such as The Visitors, Shades of Brown, and The James Clark Band. He released several records on his own labels with his funk outfit Masterplan Inc. Doug Shorts’ vocal style reflects a distinct Chicago flavor, as he sings smooth, polished, and deeply soulful songs in the style of local favorites Curtis Mayfield and Lenny Williams.
About Cherries Records
Cherries Records is a Chicago based record label founded in 2012 by Andrew Brearley (producer, Meaty Ogre) & Sheila Red (DJ Shred One), devoted to releasing a fresh alternative sound in modern r&b & funk music.

“The photos B+ captured of Dilla have become the some of the most definitive images of the producer. In another, he got Madlib & Dilla together on a short trip to Brazil in 2005. We planned to get pictures for Donuts, but Dilla’s unstable health during that time caused him to cut the trip short.” - Jeff Jank / Stones Throw
